I believe the US recognizes marriage from hundreds of countries.  For
example, let's say a British couple moves to the US and gains
citizenship; they don't need to go to a JP to have their British
marriage recognized.

In your case, you're both US citizens so you should have no problem.
You're married whether you like it or not.
