Optional is probably not the right word. Interpret within the context, then
weigh against the actual teachings of Jesus.

Old testament says "an eye for an eye". Ok, does that jive with Jesus' "turn
the other cheek"? No? Throw it out.

In just a few short pages, Christs' actual teachings throw out so much of
the fire and brimstone bunk that appears in the old testament. And yet,
evangelicals and fundamentalists conveniently leave that out as they quote
bible verse after bible verse.

Perhaps I should have put a smiley after that.
