Does anyone in the US even remember that they got busted for spying on
US Citizens?
Does the general voting public remember that?

Heck...do even the Democrats bring that up on their campaign platforms?

And this whole thing on suspension of rights, legalising torture and
habeas corpus...have any of the democrats put forward a coherent
rebuttal to those actions and new laws?

If so I haven't seen it.

Are you sure that at the highest levels of American politics both
sides aren't locked-in-step in an elaborate dance? You sure you really
have a 'choice' of policy in that country?
