My bookshelf system stero comes complete with a usb port. Dunno whether you
can connect a card reader to it?

I splurged on a squeezebox that lets me have all the music on my computer
running to my stereo system. I ripped all my cd's and they sit in a cupboard
now gathering dust.

not to threadjack (he said right before changing the subject)...

but to play off of your "I am surprised there are not more options
available" statement... we've all but done away with CDs at our house.
everything's pretty much mp3. wife and I both have our ipods (with
car adapters, etc... everything we need to pretty much listen to our
music wherever).

got some music for the kids. among that, some night-time music for
them. I've been looking to find a portable radio/boom box type of
thing for their room that I can put an SD card into. for now, i hook
my ipod up to a cheap external speaker set in their room at night.
however, it'd much rather find them their own solution (yeah ok i
don't want to leave my ipod in their room all night).

what with so many mp3 players, you'd think that the trend is moving
away from CDs. yet outside of a computer, the only way to listen to
an mp3 (without burning them to cd) seems to be a personal device
(like an ipod). why aren't there devices that let me listen to my
mp3s without having to wear headphones?

i've done some looking around and expected that it'd be easy to find a
radio with an SD slot. I was wrong (you'd be surprised how much that
happens).

have i just not looked in the right places? do such animals exist?
