Maybe I'm spoiled (okay, probably I'm spoiled) but the whole situation is vaguely unsettling. It seems like at some point in my life the 9-5 workday has morphed into a forgone expectation of 9-6 (or 8-5 if you like) as the absolute bare minimum.
This is from the prospective of an hourly employee. But in California the labor law is that a full day is 8 1/2 hours including a 1/2 hour unpaid lunch within the first 5 hours of work. If this lunch is missed, or occurs after 6 hours, it is 1 hour paid overtime for the employee. My current employer strongly discourages us missing our lunches. I am not sure how this applies to the salaried employees, but I'm sure it is different.
