I don't know what has or has not been adopted in the UK. I have not
been there in years. All I am saying is that there are risks
associated with being an early adopter.

I've expressed some disdain for the Canadian system before. But let's
bear in mind that I hear rants from family when the system does not
work. If you are looking at the population as a whole, a system where
people can get front-line treatment before their problem is serious
has a great deal of value.

For instance, I had a friend in Maryland who was diabetic but could
not afford her insulin. She would deteriorate until the local
emergency room felt the need to hospitalize her. They released her
when she was stable then the problem started all over again. That's a
dysfunctional system, there. Not only was she not getting treatment,
she was costing a great deal more that she would if she had. The fact
that various communities have programs that address this does nto
change the fact that these are patches on a system that is full of
holes.

The other side of the coin would be those who have conditions that are
not yet welll understood. I have sleep apnea for instance. My doctor
told me in very emphatic terms that my father almost certainly does as
well, and he should have a sleep study ASAP. However, he lives in
Norfolk and it seems that the NHS -- or at least his GP -- does not
yet believe in sleep apnea.
