If the Wii actually did no online game play I'd agree wholeheartedly: you
don't need online to make a good game.

However it DID do online - very badly. And Nintendo defended it as "workin'
great!" - that opens them up to criticism.

I would love a workable system that would allow my son in Scranton to play
online with his friends in Boston. But there isn't one, it's a mish-mash
mess.

I love the virtual console. Personally I bought the Wii almost exclusively
for it (especially since there have been precious few compelling experiences
outside of it for me). But doubt it will have real effect on whether the
Wii is considered a fad or not. Almost by definition the Virtual console is
mostly for traditional gamers. The "faddishness" of the Wii will be
determined by the new gamers - those people that never gamed and are now
buying the Wii in droves.

If Nintendo can't convince them to actually buy more games then it's a fad.
If Nintendo continues to provide new experiences that get these people to
buy more games then it's not a fad - it's pretty simple.

In any case I think Nintendo has already surpassed the point needed for a
sustainable life cycle. The Wii has already far outperformed the Game Cube
for example. The difference is will this really be a broad success (like
the SNES or GameBoy) or a essentially a first-party mouthpiece (like the N64
and to a lesser extent the GameCube).

I'm hoping for the former but we need some good, compelling experiences.
