Well - to be fair I don't think he said that it WAS a USB drive. Although 12 minutes is still amazingly fast for any technology. For example FireWire 800 (one of the fastest external drive connections) works at a "theoretical" maximum speed of 800 Mbps (or 0.097 GB per second). (Lemme see, hit the windows key, type "calc" and hit enter and I've got my calculator and) I find: 240(Gig)/0.097(Gig per Second) = (about) 2,474/60(seconds) = 41.2(minutes). In real life, of course, those "theoretical" maximum's are reached for only short bursts if at all. eSATA would be faster (tho' currently much less common that FireWire which itself is much, much less common than USB). So let's assume an eSATA connection with a theoretical maximum of a whopping 2400 Mbps (or 0.29 GBps): 240(Gig)/0.29(Gig per Second) = (about) 828/60(seconds) = 13.8(minutes). Looking good! At the theoretical potential limit of the hardware bus Dave's claimed transfer time _almost_ makes sense! Of course that was only done using the limits of the bus and not the limits of the drives themselves. The absolute fastest eSATA drives (dual drives running RAID 0 striped mode) read at about 0.11 GBps making our transfer time something like 36.3 minutes. (A fast external USB drive runs at more like 0.03 GBps making the transfer time more like 133 minutes.) At this point I can only assume that Apple has some magical technology (perhaps formed of compressed ego and pixie dust) that they provide for dutiful servants that we, alas, are not privy too. Either that or Dave's lying. One or the other. Take your pick.
