Only he could answer that, but there is an obvious answer: because
it's the only system yet whereby people seem to be able to live free
and prosper.

Therefore, Mr. Bush, as a freedom loving Christian, believes that he
can leave the World better than he found it by helping to provide the
gift of democracy to a region that, historically, hasn't had it.

Ataturk comes to mind since he abolished the Ottoman Caliphate and
installed (and enforced!) the principles of democracy and secularism.
(Maybe a bit like Musharraf?)

IMO, the difference between Ataturk and Bush is that Ataturk did his
work from the inside whereas Bush is from the outside.  Nevertheless,
Ataturk "6 principles" could probably be used as today as a blueprint
for Islamic democracy.
