I can empathize with the desperation and understand the hopelessness 
without condoning the actions.

I think this is one of the problems with the sensationalist gossip that 
passes for news today.  The result of this was a horrible act by a 
desperate man, we must condemn him and as such anybody who attempts to 
understand how he got to this point is "soft" on crime or whatever. 

I think it is more productive to accept both.  His action was horrific, 
consequences should apply.  But, at the same time, contemplating the 
root causes and what could have been done to mitigate them can also be a 
benefit to society.  And not just say "this is a bad man, he made a bad 
choice, civilized men would not make this choice, so anything that 
contributed to the choice is of no concern to civilized people since 
they will never make such a choice even if in the same circumstance."
