Younger kids (under 10) are Cub Scouts. 10 year olds are "Webelos". 11
and up are Boy Scouts.

Cub scouts seldom participate in organized overnight campouts. Seldom
handle sharp things, and seldom handle firearms. Boy Scouts often do
all of the above.

The level of involvement is completely up to the kids and the parents.

Some people eat and breath it, some come every other meeting. It all depends.

But what you get out of it is in direct proportion to the commitment
of the kids. (just like baseball, karate, or school). There can be
lots of homework if the kid is committed.

I was in scouts from the age of 3 (unofficially, but my mom was a den
mother, and i went to every event) through the age of 18. I also was a
Webelos leader in my mid 20s.

I cannot recommend the experience highly enough.

It will feel very familiar to someone with a military background. Much
of the principles of organization are based on turn-of-the-century
(1900) military manuals.

They promote citizenship, personal and civic pride, patriotism, and
respect for others. all good things in my book.

As for time commitments, depending on your local council, there is
often something every night, local meetings (den meetings) usually
once per week, pack meetings once per month or once every other month,
and events just about every weekend.
