Yes it ended up being a space at the end of the FROM address causing this

Sounds like the "to" or "from" (you need a valid from, in most cases) is
screwy.

try just taking the first "<" off of the cfmail open/close tags, and dumping
the whole thing, and see what it's really trying to do.

Are you sure your mail server settings are correct?  You could try
hard-coding them in there too..
