You are not comparing like with like.

As Zaphod points out, Apple design/construction is far superior to
Dell and that's just one reason for any price differential. More to
the point, if you really do spec out the Dell identically, you'll find
that $1,000 shrinks dramatically.

Last time I spec'd out truly comparable systems from Apple and Dell,
Apple was $800 *cheaper*...
