Chaco Canyon is older than the cliff dwellings, which did not appear until about 1250. The oldest buildings in Chaco date from about 850 AD and the larger structures were the first multi-family residences in the United States.
It's a World Heritage site and one of New Mexico's best-kept secrets, a hundred miles from everything. NPS deliberately keeps the roads bad because they do not have the resources to protect it properly. If you have not been it's worth the trip.... go out 40 to Thoreau then follow the signs. What I found most striking was the silence. There is no traffic, no airplanes, no radios. I was walking one of the trails and heard a noise... and realized it was a lizard running across the path 50 yards ahead. It is eerie to realize that a powerful civilization can be that gone.
