The changes that were needed were made, as were a great number of changes

The so-called Jeffersonian republic you love so much allowed slavery,
indentured servitude and people to starve in the streets. I figure that as a
nation we've advanced a bit since then. If you want to go back to an 18th
century ideal, well I am sure that there are countries like Burma etc who
would be glad to help. Myself I prefer having a social safety net.

What socialism? There is nothing in this country that even comes close to
the British, German or Swedish approaches. When you look at a number of
health related and longevity factors, the citizens of those so called evil
socialist countries have a longer life span, are healthier throughout their
lives, they also have more wealth on a per capita basis. and by a number of
different measures are happier. Also the infant mortality rates are
signficantly lower.  And you cannot say that these nations are not
democracies (they all have political participation rates far in excess of
the miserable rates seen in the US).
