Paul Campaign Sets Record

Susan Davis reports on the presidential race.

They didn't hit their target, but supporters of Rep. Ron Paul's
campaign made history Monday in what appears to be the single biggest
day for online donations for a presidential bid.

This morning the Texas congressman reported on his Web site a total of
more than $7.2 million. When the 24-hour "moneybomb" started at
midnight Sunday, the campaign showed $2.77 million on the site.

"Is it possible to comprehend what we've done today? Earth-shattering,
jaw-dropping… No matter which way you phrase it, Ron Paul is for
real," wrote campaign finance director Jonathan Bydlak on the site.

More than 21,000 individual donors contributed to the effort,
according to Paul's camp, and in the first 16 hours they passed former
presidential candidate John Kerry's $2.7 million record for online
fund-raising in 2004 after the Super Tuesday primaries — and
Republican Sen. John McCain's $1 million raised online after he won
New Hampshire in 2000. The Paul campaign has set a $12 million target
for the fourth quarter. From here, it looks like it will hit that
mark.

With this kind of cash on hand, don't expect Paul to go quietly. He
has more money at this point than McCain and former Arkansas Gov. Mike
Huckabee. While he stands little chance of winning or placing in the
Iowa Caucus Jan. 3, there appears to be an increasingly possibility
that he could have a spoiler effect in the New Hampshire primary —
where his fierce libertarian vein of politics is most likely to appeal
to primary voters.

If this money trend continues, Paul could also stay in the race for
the long haul leading up to the Republican Convention in St. Paul,
Minn., in September 2008.
