I had asked the same thing and according to the ferret experts, (i.e.., Dr. Bruce H. Williams of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology http://www.afip.org/ferrets/), its an instinctual hold over.
Our four ferrets do this as well. We have some of the large plastic Easter eggs and they will grasp the egg in their paws and then move backwards.
