Nope. Just happened out of the blue. She was diligent on changing oil. In fact, that's the first thing MaxCare wanted was documentation that she had regularly changed her oil. That's where our meticulous record keeping paid off. They called earlier today to verify that everything was covered (i.e., they had no grounds to deny the claim).
Which brings up another good point: document everything with receipts, and have a good paper filing system so that nothing takes longer than 60 seconds to find (maximum comfortable time to keep a clerk on the phone while you look; you'll never get the same person if you call back). Any warranty company that wants to stay in business needs to deny any claim that it can, and it all hinges on documentation of the warranty holder's responsibilities. There are only two "extended warranty"-type services I would ever buy: for a CarMax used car, and for an expensive exercise machine. Lisa's CarMax car (Geo Prizm - made by Toyota) had 8K miles left on the extended warranty when the engine threw a crankshaft bearing and handgrenaded itself. She gets a complete new engine, and it's totally covered. Like a brand new car after four years, and the engine is a Toyota, so you know it's going to last damned near forever. Yay!
