After the long (86 posts) thread about this movie and it's "corrupting
influence on youth", I finally got around to seeing it today.

First off, it's a really, really good movie! I was very surprised to
discover it was always two hours because it absolutely flew past and
when the credits appeared I was just begging for part two (it's one of
a three part series and I gather that New Line have done *some* work
on part two so here's hoping we get all three). The story is
fast-paced and engaging.

For those who haven't seen it, I will not provide spoilers but I will
characterize it as a battle between advocates of free will and an
oppressive, powerful ruling organization that wants their world to
know "no truth but their own".

To put it in context for the thread we had recently, I would not class
it as anti-religion but I can see how it could be viewed as
anti-church. The Magisterium looks a lot like the Roman Catholic
Church but perhaps more based on the era of the Inquisition but the
Magisterium could also just as easily be the Communist Party
controlling the USSR back in the day - and certainly their military
enforcers could be mistaken for the Russian army.

Having seen the movie, I'm stunned that (some) Christians are so upset
by it. I'm sure the ones who are upset have not actually seen it and
therefore they're spreading a lot of FUD about the movie based on
hearsay (which has tended to be the pattern for a number of movies
that radical religious groups have boycotted).

I thought it was a great adventure movie and rather uplifting. I look
forward to the two sequels.
