I'm right in the middle of the book right now. While the Magisterium is a thinly veiled version of the Catholic Church, it one that had a real serious departure from our system well before the Reformation. In fact its a very different world all together. I think those extremist religious types who were offended by the movie's portrayal of the Magisterium have some other major problems. Separating fantasy from reality comes to mind.
