We use firstname.lastname, which is still not without it's idiosyncrasies - hyphenated names look weird that way, as to names like mary.ellen.smith or should that be maryellen.smith? But, overall, we've liked using it. We're working on the whole singe sign on thing, but we're not quite there yet.
