That's been the standard for every company I've worked with.

There will always be conflicts... I'm "jdavis" at my company but there are
19 others as well (jdavis1, jdavis2, etc).  (There are something 90,000
addresses to that domain... there's bound to be duplicates no matter what
system you use).

Some use middle initial to differentiate, others use middle names.

I would also suggest standardizing this across usages.  Email address should
also be network logon for example.  My company does this but isn't quite
there (I'm "jdavis" in email but "jwdavis" on the network).  We also use an
arbitrary "employee number" for single sign-on to corporate resources.

I've got a file of dozens of systems, each using one of several IDs
(network, employee ID, SSN, etc).  Simplify this while you're small and
stick to it!  ;^)
