Ad-aware is a great scanner ... but I wouldn't recommend leaving it on permanently. I've had a lot of trouble with in that regard: it's a resource hog and it often gets confused and tried to protect you from yourself. For example my Internet Explorer home page was set to gibberish and I couldn't change it... figured out Ad Aware was "protecting" it. I leave it installed but inactive and scan regularly. I've actually come to like Windows Defender a lot personally.
