There was at least one or two successful tests of an energy beam weapon like two years ago, of course funding has since been cut due to the ongoing wars.
I think personally that tactical anti-missile defense is more important than strategic. We know that there are a great many countries that have missile systems that can go hundreds to thousands of miles, but only something like 5 countries that can produce ballistic missiles, and three of them are our allies.
