Pet peeve:

when they "counted up" your change from amount due to amount tendered, they
used to give you the coins first. They worked up to the next dollar, then
counted out the bills.

now, the stupid machine says "give them $3.45" so they give you the bills,
then dump the coins on top of the bills. Of course a lot of the time coins
slide off.  I try to say "please give me the coins *first*, then the bills"
and get blank, uncomprehending stares, as if that won't work for some
reason.  Puny cpu's in robots with limited programming, <sigh>.

And the U.S. is somehow supposed to compete in the world economy??
