You pretty much can't read Apple... i bought my MacBook on a saturday on then on the following Tuesday they upgraded the whole line. You gotta just dive in when you are ready and not worry about what they are going to do.
If your wife doesn't do anything heavy duty then you might look at one of the refurbs or getting it off eBay/Craigslist. J.J.
