Hyperbole's fatal flaw is its tendency to greatly exaggerate things for

the dictionary:

1.      a person who is notably stupid or lacking in good judgment.

Invading Iraq when all signs, facts, and analysis for over a decade pointed
to a quagmire ... well "lacking in good judgment" is not quite strong enough
....

So you're right I guess - it was hyperbolically weak statement.  Let me try
again:

Invading Iraq was imbecilic and horrifically irresponsible.
