I saw most of the Voyager series and a bit of Enterprise. I saw both of them
as a revisionist 'update' to Star Trek. Who would honestly believe that the
Federation (especially prior to Kirk) was prone to hand-wringing over
complex moral ambiguities.

Yeah, I kind of get that feeling watching it and only being near the end of
the first season so far, that there's seldom a story line about just normal
everyday life.
