I take a different view, they are they because of attacks on the U.S. military, period.
The rationale of the 911 attacks doesn't end, because it's when we tire and move on that it will happen again. AQ isn't our only enemy in our conflict, and at this point it's abilities are drastically reduced. The state sponsors of terror have moved on to new groups to spread their hate and violence. As we refuse to tackle to root of the problem we continue to fight these actions by proxy in Afghanistan and Iraq. Eventually we will go to war in Iran, Saudi, Syria, and most likely Pakistan. It probably won't be for decades, as I'm sure the next president will be more concerned with getting his second term than he will be with the national security of our nation.
