You're forgetting one key point: Obama isn't using it as an end-to-end solution. All he's saying is that charity works. Further, there's the political angle that you've gotten wrong: he isn't courting evangelicals (although that's a side benefit), he's courting middle-america. He's telling Ma Jones that the church food drive is pretty kick butt and a great way to serve America. The genius is that he's both right, he isn't boxing himself in, he's showing his down-home values side, and he's helping to drive value-added change.
