Having had a nervous breakdown around 10+ years ago, I can safely say that when I was prescribed anti depressants I was like I am not a mental case (although some might disagree).
The point is that when your anxiety levels are extreme, the right meds help tremendously. I tried alternative natural and anything that was not addictive. But the reality was that the drugs neutralise the effects that severe anxiety brings on. I am by now means an expert, and I don't claim that it works for everyone. However in my case it worked, and I was on the speediest recovery ever. In response to whether depression can be solved with meds, is debatable. And there are many factors that come into play, I know someone who has been diagnosed with Asperger or as you guys in America might now it as Higher Functioning Disorder which is almost full blown Autism. The point that this is a mental condition, not that they can't function as they can function normally. The problem is the neural receptors in the brain are misaligned, and drugs are usually the best approach. Not in all cases either mind you, and the jury is still out on that debate. But I mentioned that because, this person was diagnoes with Bi-Polar or Manic depression as it was known in those days, many many years ago. And over time certain things didn't make sense, and was eventually diagnosed with Asperger via the standard test, just can't think of it of the top of my head. But the point is that he could have been diagnosed with anything in his younger years, but it wasn't till the 90's when Asperger / Autisim became a part of the test. After learning about this mental order (Maybe not PC - Politically Correct), I wonder at times how many people are really misdiagnosed? I can't vouch for you guys / gals in the USA, but here in Australia recently they spoke about the super bugs in our hospitals. And how deadly they are, and that recently they have reduced the amount of cases with Golden Staff etc, just by being a bit more responsible with antibiotics. -- Senior Coldfusion Developer Aegeon Pty.
