I'd go for either a Dell or an Toshiba myself. We have a Dell Inspiron 8000 here and it is wonderful.

Headphones, telephone, TV, Playstation...but every single Sony thing I buy seems to break, and don't bother calling Sony about it. For example, I have a pair of $150 Sony headphones that developed some hairline fractures within 6 months of purchase, that were causing it not to fit correctly. They told me I'd have to ship it to them and pay $60 to get them fixed! The $200 2.1 GHz Sony phone has developed a lot of strange quirks, and has an extremely low charge time. Sony Playstations are garbage from a reliability standpoint, and their TV's can't stand up to Toshiba's on a price/preformace comparison.
