For me, McCain lost the respect I had for him and joined "the
establishment" when he started making calculated moves to the right to
try and position himself for the nomination. The worst, for me, was
making up with Jerry "agent of intolerance" Falwell. And then starting
to hang out with Rev. Hagee and his ilk, cozying up to the
fundamentalist wing. It also included more time voting the party line
on things like tax cuts without spending offsets, sharing birthday
cake with Bush during Hurricane Katrina, etc. Now I don't believe that
McCain likes Bush. I want to think they are ideologically different
and that there is no love there, especially after what Bush did to
McCain in the South Carolina primary in 2000.

But then McCain goes and hires the PR dude from the Bush campaign that
smeared him in SC. Maybe McCain was swallowing his pride and just
trying to do what he needed to in order to win the nomination and then
believed he'd be able to go to the center for the national election.
But then things got tough and he picked Palin who is another character
from the far right that fits in perfectly with the Bushies.

Perhaps deep down inside McCain hasn't changed and he is doing this
out of expediency. Maybe he thinks that the ends justify the means and
that all he needs to do is win and he'll be able to make up for the
campaign with 4 good years in the Whitehouse. After being beaten by a
clearly inferior candidate in Bush in 2000, I could see the rationale.
But that isn't, to me, how a maverick is supposed to do things. I
don't buy victory at all costs.
