I generally hate FPSs on consoles, but prefer third-person shooters there.

That said "Resistance" (1 and 2) is, by far, the best FPS experience on the
PS3. There's a glut of them - most cheap now - that are all perfectly fine.
"Dark Sector", "The Darkness", "F.E.A.R", "Haze", "Turok". Of course the
big cross-platform boys are also out "Bioshock", "Mirror's Edge", etc.

Most all of these have demos available - that's easily enough to time to
tell whether you'll care to pay for them.

As far as Third-Person goes you've got some truly great options.
"Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" is (far and away) my favorite but "Metal Gear
Solid" is amazing as well. The "Ratchet and Clank" games are more
platform-oriented, but shooter-heavy (and great).

My development workstation is plenty beefy but I'm not sinking money into
gaming hardware anymore either... I'll buy two year video cards for $30
rather than spend $500 on something new. ;^)

I am trying to get into more PC gaming tho' - if for no other reason than
now that the kids are getting older getting TV time is becoming more and
more difficult. ;^)
