Yes, you should be able to use it, you just can't use the exact code.

That would be like saying, I came to this company where they taught me 
Spanish, if I leave does that mean I can't speak Spanish anymore? Of course 
not.

It becomes cloudy when you were creating new technology, or use technology 
created by the company for internal use only. But if you can prove you 
could have learned how on your own, you should be ok.
