The huge error in that thinking is that it's an either/or.

It's not.

If I put you on a long electrified leash, I can let you run so far
that you think you're free.

But if I've decided you've gone too far I can give you a little jolt -
no near enough to kill you - but enough to get your attention.

China can do the same to us.  They don't have to "ruin us".   They
could jolt our entire economy for a week; nothing too bad, but a jolt.

And, like I said, they could do more if they wanted - not a lot - but
more.  It would hurt them, no doubt.  But it would hurt us worse.

There are degrees of pain and China controls ours until we buy back
our debt from them.
