I called the US a dozen times while I was in Mexico, to coordinate with the
dogsitter and the friend we left our car with before we went south.

It is *not* hard. In a tourist hotel they probably have everything you need
on the premises and if not there will be a place within two blocks of the
hotel. And ok, if you absolutely have to use your iPhone and not a landline,
apparently this can happen too, so....
