What kills me is that one (1) set of bad data from an obscure school that no
one had heard of is being used as the basis to shoot down an entire
hypothesis.

Isn't that the beauty of science.  A group of scientists can offer an
opposing view and if that view is shown to be supported by the evidence then
the hypothesis will be modified.  This is all because science is about
finding the facts, regardless of whether they agree with your original
hypothesis or not.  

Meanwhile, the public gets a hold of a snippet of a dissenting view and says
, "Ah ha!  One group of scientists disagrees....the others must be wrong!".
