Most people running for office are not really that far apart politically. They all believe in schools, fire departments, roads, and police.
Most differences are on not-too-important-to-me items. And there are enough centrists (or obstructionists) to not allow the really radical folk too much leeway. Part of my respect of an individual is in the elected official's integrity to do what they were elected for, which is represent their constituency amongst the body politic.
