Same thing happens at the turn of just about every century.  There was a
Christian fundamentalist movement that thought the end of the world was
going to happen in 1800, then again in 1850, then again in 1900...I think
they finally gave up after the 3rd time didn't come to pass.

Not recent at all.

If you enjoy history, look up some accounts on how many people gave up 
*everything* they posses, convinced that the world would not exist after 
the year 1000.
