This is very real! I went through a horrible abusive situation with my supervisor last year.
Under normal circumstances I would have quit and took another job. However, I was recovering from surgery (likely the reason for the harassment), and in this job market finding another job in my situation would have been impossible. Not to mention all of the benefits I would have lost. I joined the local workers union (at the prodding of my co-workers and friends), and they fought on my behalf.
