How would a church be forced to do anything? It would only allow religions
that are not homophobic to marry their parishioners who are gay. Religious
institutions are free to tell someone they won't marry them and laws cannot
be passed to change that as that would be violating the first amendment,
just as these anti-gay marriage laws violate the first amendment because
they are telling non-homophobic churches that they can't marry same sex
couples.

That'd be the way to go. It's either that or force religious
institutions to perform marriage ceremonies for unions that violate
their religions. Or just don't let gay people get married, but taking
that road would be basically impossible for our nation at this point
even if the majority still wanted to.

So why isn't that your fight. Fight to change the marriage license to
civil union and it's done.
Oddly enough that could be done easily bit what's the fun in that.
With no opponents who do you get to brand as haters?
