Yup, it was a drain plug at the back under neath the prop.  There are
two kinds ... one with little twist things to tighten and one with a
sort of tab that folders over.  I had the latter, and it must've come
loose.  I now use the twist ones and I keep a spare in the glove
compartment!

Yup, there was a lot of water the the engine compartment ... I have a
little 17' open bow ski boat with a stern drive (inboard/outboard)

Other boats wakes do not generally make it difficult to stay afloat =)
