I have a friend who took on a new job. One of the tasks she has is to figure out the scheduling for her office. All the employees are union and get really pissy if things aren't fair. She has been tasked to come up with a system that as she explains it to me I don't think is even possible. Does anyone know of a system or algorithm to fulfill the following criteria.
8 ppl. Must work either a five or seven straight days. Shifts requirements are 3ppl mon to fri 9am to 5pm. 2ppl mon to fri 3pm to 11pm. 2ppl sun to thurs 11pm to 7am. (there's no one from 7am to 9am) 2ppl sat & sun 9am to 5pm. 2ppl sat & sun 3pm to 11pm. 2ppl fri & sat 11pm to 7am. Each person needs 40 hours a week, average over 4 weeks. So one two week period could be 9 shifts and the other 11, or 10 and 10. I tried to start coming up with a system and my brain immediately started smoking.
