I had the same issue in Naperville, IL. You can't spit without hitting an
SUV driving, cell-phone surgically attached to the ear, yuppie. Yet in one
house we lived in there...in clear site of 2 cell towers that were about 2
city blocks away...no cell service from VZ. We tried several different
phones before they told me that we did everything we could possibly do to
resolve the issue and that if I wanted out of my contract (I was 6 months
into a 2 yr contract), that I could with no penalty. Since not having cell
service at the house wasn't one of those life ending events, I stuck with
them. A few months later, Naperville finally approved a few cell towers
they had been dragging their asses on approving and I had service.

I find it ironic that the San Francisco area and Silicon Valley have the
worst cell coverage. You would think that being in the midst of all that
technology they could figure a way to provide simple cell phone service. I
live on a mountain overlooking San Francisco bay.
We have three different carriers - Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T - and can't
get signal up here from any of them. Internet service is also much less
reliable than on the East Coast.
