One thing that I've found particularly disturbing so far is that
reports keep talking about "rebels" but without ever identifying *who
they are*. I'm anti-Gaddafi. No problems there. However, the whole "an
enemy of my enemy is my friend" gig has lead us down some particularly
odious corridors in not-so-distant history.

I know that our intelligence agencies like to keep tabs on elements in
various important societies, so maybe they have a bit of a handle on
who might be part of this "rebellion" and what their goals are other
than the "not Gaddafi" sort. Or maybe not. Gaddafi has held a pretty
iron-clad fist over the country for a long time and no one seemed to
be predicting a serious threat to his power any time soon.

Regardless, I think it behooves us to know what is going on before we
put too much might (military and otherwise) in the game. I'd love to
see Gaddafi go down. But if we play a part in that process then we are
implicitly playing a part in what comes after and right now I have not
heard any solid stories, or even librettos, of what comes after.

In defense of freedom is a great idea, but it presupposes that the
people who are not Gaddafi are looking for freedom as we understand
it. Are they?
