The US taxpayer - you! - provides them with billions in back-door guarantees through companies like AIG, and billions in front-door cash through TARP. (2.) We take trillions in toxic assets off their books - the ones they chose to gamble on but now the US taxpayer owns. (BTW, you, the US taxpayer, now guarantee 9 out of 10 US home loans. You know that idiot down the road that bought WAY more house than they can afford? Well there's a 90% chance you're backstopping them.) (3.) To get the economy out of the crapper we also give the banks billions *for them to lend to small businesses* ... and they proceed to NOT lend that money to business but rather use it to "pay us back" for the money they got from TARP above! And now the US government and the banks are celebrating the success of TARP.
