My basic goal for Colony has been to build a system that enables you to pop
a server onto the cloud and deploy any one of a number of built-in
functional modules - collaboration, file storage, etc., with an intention
for the server to be used by a single person or a small group of people, and
then to build a p2p communication system among the server to build higher
level collaborations, e.g. Facebook, in a distributed system where no single
entity controls the platform.

I'd like the base system to be open source so anyone can join. Identity is
the single biggest challenge, and why I say it's the most important issue
facing users on the Net. Since it can be run in a VM, folks could even
download it and run it locally if they can't afford a VM in the cloud. There
have been a couple of projects like that brewing, but nothing that I have
has really taken off.
