What's in Steve Jobs's FBI file?

The FBI had a dossier on Steve Jobs.

Read his recent biography and you'll know the late Apple founder was
sometimes a jerk and admitted to dabbling in drugs, but that wasn’t
enough to prompt Justice Department scrutiny.

The George H.W. Bush administration prompted the FBI to put together a
background check of the legendary Apple executive back in 1991 to
consider him for an appointment to the President’s Export Council.

The FBI made the file public Thursday after The Wall Street Journal
requested the background report through the Freedom of Information
Act.

In addition to listing Jobs’s biographical data and employment
history, the documents chronicle a class action lawsuit Jobs faced at
Apple. It also includes commentary from acquaintances about his
character and personality.

Many of the subjects interviewed offered favorable comments about Jobs
saying he is bright and ambitious. At least one interviewee mentioned
that Jobs had a daughter out of wedlock.

Most of the sources were redacted in the report.

Throughout the report the question of whether Jobs used illegal drugs
came up a variety of times. Many people interviewed for the report
said they were unaware of any illegal drug use by Jobs. One female
interviewee said that she and Jobs “both experimented with various
drugs.” She declined to say which drugs and characterized as a normal
part of growing up in the '60s and '70s.

“During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mr. Jobs may have experimented
with illegal drugs, having come from that generation,” another source
notes. Others told the FBI that the computer mogul tried marijuana and
LSD while in college.

Some of the details in the filings corroborate the details from Walter
Isaacson’s biography of Jobs, who died of pancreatic cancer on Oct. 5
after stepping down from the company he co-founded. He was 56. Many
dealt with his personality.

The WSJ said that sources told the agency that Jobs was “strong
willed, stubborn, hardworking and driven, which they believe is why he
is so successful.”

The paper quoted another source being reluctant to discuss Jobs over
“questions concerning his ethics and morality.”

An agent’s report reflects in the file reported, “Several individuals
questioned Mr. Jobs’s honesty stating that Mr. Jobs will twist the
truth and distort reality in order to achieve his goals.”
