I dunno.  $17 sounds OK to me.  godaddy charges $10 for a domain.  If 
wordpress.com is a registered reseller, they get them 'wholesale' for 
less than that.  After that, they only need to set up the DNS records 
(if you don't use someone else) and set up the host headers to point to 
your particular blog.  Then, well, they don't have to do anything ever 
again.  They collect a yearly fee for doing absolutely nothing :)

At least, that's what I assume they are doing.

It's probably automated anyway and they have tools where you get to do 
any other extra work on your own.
